GOAL: 10,000

With 180,000 people incarcerated in federal prisons, our prison population is growing at an astonishing rate and taking up a larger and larger share of resources. We would be better off investing in treatment, education, housing, and other social services that actually reduce crime and keep our communities safe.   Our prisons have become warehouses often leaving people more traumatized and with fewer opportunities than when they entered. The FIRST STEP Act will ensure that people have the support they need to come home from prison job ready.

CALL YOUR MEMBER OF CONGRESS:

Tell your member of Congress you support the FIRST STEP Act because it will:

  • Ban the shackling of women during childbirth.
  • Place people within 500 driving miles of their families.
  • Important provisions for women, children and families.
  • Provide major incentives to pursue life-changing classes.
  • Requires the BOP to assist with obtaining IDs prior to release.
  • Give people in prison who are elderly or terminally ill a pathway home.
  • Allow formerly incarcerated people to serve as volunteers and mentors.
  • Give thousands of men and women an opportunity to come home sooner.
  • Authorizes $250 million over five years for development and expansion of programs.
