Statement on President Trump’s Endorsement of the FIRST STEP Act

#cut50 and the National Urban League applaud Republicans, Democrats and President Trump for their support of the FIRST STEP Act. The legislation overwhelmingly passed the US House with strong bipartisan support in May, 360-59. A new compromise in the Senate has expanded and improved the bill to also tackle some of the harshest, most unfair, and most outdated penalties in our criminal justice system.

“Trump is on his way to becoming the uniter-in-chief on an issue that has long divided the nation. We applaud President Trump for supporting the FIRST STEP Act. I am so glad to see him join a growing bipartisan movement that spans racial lines, geographic divides, class, and political party in support of policies that promote public safety, rehabilitation, and fairness.” - Van Jones

“The President is on the right side of history,” National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial said. “I commend his willingness to do what is right on behalf of some of the most voiceless and disenfranchised among us. The FIRST STEP Act is the result of long-fought bipartisan negotiations and compromise. It has received support from celebrities, law enforcement leaders, the faith community, and the grassroots. All have come together to make sure we get this bill passed. I am encouraged that the President has endorsed this legislation today and I urge Senate Majority Leader McConnell to bring this bill to the floor as soon as the calendar will allow.”

“Today, President Trump stood up for families who have had to endure for too long - with their loved ones thousands of miles away. He stood up for women in our federal prisons who are shackled while pregnant or giving birth to their babies. He stood up for people who spend their nights in cold prison cells - warehoused without the treatment, services, and support to set them up for success when they come home. Today, the President ended the notion that our criminal justice system was designed only to incarcerate and punish and not rehabilitate or heal. The FIRST STEP Act is exactly that - a start to the long process of unwinding mass incarceration and bringing fairness and Dignity to the people in its grasp. We thank President Trump for his support and urge Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to move this bill forward quickly.” - Jessica Jackson Sloan
